How to compare locksmiths

Comparing locksmiths is a good idea before you decide book one in. You can compare by:

  • Looking at their website to see if they are the type of locksmith you are looking for.

  • Find out where they are located. Some may be based in the Eastern Suburbs, others may only service the area, but be based in other parts of Sydney.

  • See if their services are what you are looking for, you may be better with a locksmith that specialises of focuses on the type of job you want done as opposed to an allrounder.

  • Compare locksmith reviews for each of the companies you are considering contacting. If reviews are not very positive on a whole, you may be best to choose another locksmith.

  • Get quotes from two or three Eastern Suburbs locksmiths.

  3. Emergency 24/7 service. Time is money for real estate agents, so you need a locksmith who can be there when you need the most. The locksmiths service levels is also a reflection on the real estate agent, so you need them to maintain the same level of service you provide your buyers, sellers or tenants.

  2. Locked out of a listing. When something unexpected happens and you have prospective buyers about to arrive at a property, you may want a locksmith on call to provide access. It could be a key that doesn't work or the key isn't in the lock box as expected or you left the keys on the office. You don't want all your marketing efforts to go to waste if buyers turn up at a property and cannot access the home.

  3. Locked your keys in your house or car. Being a real estate agent, especially on a Saturday morning can be frantic getting out the door or trying to get to your next listing. Sometime in your career, you may forget or misplace the keys to one of your properties, locked yourself out of your home or car or locked properties keys in your car. How do door locks work?

The most common types of door locks are the pin-an-tumbler locking systems. These mechanisms contain a series of spring-loaded pins. When you insert a key, the springs are compressed and the pins are lifted. When the correct key is in the lock, the pins will line up and allow you to turn the key, opening the lock. When the key is not in the lock the pins keep the bolt in place. If an incorrect key is used, it will not set the pins in the correct position, blocking the key from turning.

Can you re-key locks?

Yes you can rekey locks. This means you can be confident of your security and you have all the keys to the property. It can also be a cheaper alternative to replacing the entire lock.

Should I change my locks after moving house?

It is always a good idea to change the locks if you have just purchased a new home. If the house has had someone living in it previously, it is highly likely that there are some spare keys that have not been accounted for. This can make you susceptible to break-ins.

The good news is, you don’t need to buy a whole new locking system. A cheaper option is to get the old locks rekeyed. This means you save money, and the old keys won’t work anymore.

Key Cutting Eastern Suburbs

Looking for key cutting in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs? We have identified 4 local key cutters nearby which should be able to cut your keys.

When a key is cut, it is duplicated from another key. To get the best key cutting result, you should provide the original copy rather than a duplicate so you aren't getting a copy of a copy. Doing so could mean some subtle differences which means it may not work as well in the lock.

4 reasons to get keys cut

  1. Need an extra set of keys so someone else can have access

  2. Want a spare set of keys for yourself or to give to a friend or family member just in case yours are lost or stolen.

  3. Replacement for a lost set

  4. You have new locks and need multiple sets to the locks

Locksmith FAQs

Should you change locks after buying house?

The decision is up to you if you should change the locks on you new home. If you believe you have all the original and copies of keys to your new home, you may be comfortable with keeping the same locks. However for peace of mind and to remove all doubt, especially if you have a family, it may be best to change all the door and window locks after you buy your new house and before you move in.

How do locksmiths verify ownership?

Rightly so, a locksmith will tend to check you live at a property or own a vehicle before they gain access by unlocking your door. They may ask to see your drivers licence, passport, bills or vehicle registration papers.

Why do locksmiths charge so much?

The prices charged by locksmiths can vary significantly. The price charged can be dictated by the type of lock, if it is a high security lock or difficult lock to unlock, it can take much longer and greater skill and therefore a higher price is charged. The day and time may also have a significant impact on price along with the urgency of the job. To come out late at night on a weekend comes with an after hours charge which can be significant at midnight on a Saturday night for example.

Can you change locks yourself?

You have the option of swapping out the whole lock and door handle mechanism with a whole new system which can be purchased relatively inexpensively from a hardware store. Alternatively you can take the mechanism to the locksmith and they can change the lock barrel and provide you with new keys.

Can a locksmith unlock a safe?

Yes locksmiths can crack a safe.

Does a locksmith break your lock?

Generally speaking, a locksmith will not need to break your lock to gain entry or to repair it. In the case of a door, they should not require to break your door either. They also have specialised tools which can help remove a broken key from a cars door or ignition without causing any damage and avoiding more costs.

Is it cheaper to rekey or replace locks?

It can be cheaper to simply rekey rather than replace all the locks and door handles. Rekeying may be a good option for you if you have several doors that all have different keys, that way you can have one key that opens all doors.
